Old Fashioned Baking Soda Found To Be The Most Effective At Removing Pesticide Residue

Researchers have found that baking soda successfully removes most of the pesticides from fruits and vegetables. In fact, it eliminates up to 96% of pesticides from vegetables and fruits, therefore it’s known as one of the best and cheap cleaning solutions.

There can be all kinds of pesticides on fruits and vegetables so cleaning them should be a step you don’t want to miss. Fortunately, baking soda is highly alkaline and easily neutralizes germs and bacteria by breaking them down into tiny molecules.

Here are 3 study results in removing pesticide residue from fresh produce

  • Tap water

Tap water didn’t remove pesticides completely even after a 2-minute scrubbing the produce.

  • A 1% baking soda/water solution

Baking soda solution removes more than 80% of the thiabendazole from apples after 12 and 15 minute soaks. It was even more effective in removing the phosmet, at 96 percent after washing for the same amount of time.

  • Bleach solution approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency

Thiabendazole and phosmet are really different. The first goes 80 micrometers deep in the apple, while the phosmet goes about 20 micrometers deep in the fruit.
